Review| Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard

Rating: ★★★★☆

Genre: Young Adult, Fiction, Fantasy

Summary:

In this world humans are divided by blood. You have the Red-blooded (Reds), who are ordinary humans with nothing special about them; you have the Silver-blooded (Silvers), who have special abilities, are strong and are in command. Mare Barrow, our protagonist is of red blood and lives her days dreading the war and despising the silvers. When an incident happened and she discovers secrets about herself that nobody knew, not even her, she is forced to join the silvers as a princess to keep the Royal silver family happy. This is when trouble ensues and she must fight to protect herself and her people.

My thoughts:

This is another book that follows the typical YA fantasy genre layout. A young girl or boy is average or below average even, when an incident happens and they discover they are more than they thought and maybe even special. After this is discovered they go on adventures and deal with danger and drama they never thought possible.

Even though this book follows that oh so typical plot line it’s still an amazing book. It’s easy to quickly like the characters and feel for them as you read along. Mare Barrow, the main character, is not annoying or unlikable as some YA protagonists can end up being. The secondary characters are no less likeable and it’s likely you will be cheering for one or more of them. The antagonists are done perfectly as you will find yourself hating them and wishing for their demise. Aveyard did a wonderful job creating her characters and having you developing feelings, whether good or bad, for the lot of them.

This book is enjoyable to read and for me went by very quickly. Not because it was just an easy read but because I could not put it down. I was so engrossed in the story that I could not wait to pick it up again after having to take a break. I know I said this was a typical plot but the extra details and sub-plots that Aveyard added to the story made it such and exciting, enjoyable read it deserves nothing less than four out of five stars. The one is just left out for the stereotypical plot of course. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good read about fantasy, powers, adventure and rebellion. Happy Reading!

Cheers!
